Lighting Task - Film Language Pack

High Key lighting is used to create a more realistic look. There is also a use of back lighting to emphasise the actors expressions in this image. This makes the audience aware that she is the focus of this particular scene. Due to the emphasise of the expressions created by the lighting we can associate the word criminality with the woman. In the still the smoke also is greatly emphasised this is done most likely using under lighting. From this we can assume that the woman is fairly mysterious. As a result, of the way in which the lighting is used we can associate that she is a typical femme fatale who uses her sexuality to interest a man. This is shown as the woman pictured seems to have a look of distress and worry on her face.

This image uses High Key lighting which depicts a dimly lit scene.  The focus of the image is the woman's face which is due the top lighting used. This helps to accentuate the features of the woman such as her nose structure. While the rest of her body can't be seen it is engulfed in darkness. The shadows created by the lighting help to attach such words as pain and concern. The effect of creating dramatic shadows is known as Chiaroscuro.

This image uses high key lighting as the mans facial expression  can clearly be seen and some  top lighting  has also been used to make his face appear to have more of a glow although it is a black and white still. The glow created by the top lighting draws attention to the crown, which could suggest that he is an individual of high authority or status. With the lighting used in the image we can clearly see the aggressive look on his face which could suggest he is angry and out for some revenge. This would then draw in the audience and make them want to watch more.

This image uses high key lighting which depicts a dimly lit scene and creates a slight shadow on the mans figure. Some top lighting is also used which highlights the facial expressions of the man and gives across a serious look about the character. This could mean that the man is the protagonist of the film/scene. On the other hand, the gun in his hand could suggest enigma codes to the audience about the characters identity which in turn would draw them in to watch the film.

This uses low key lighting creating a strong contrast between light and dark which then creates dramatic shadows and part of the lady's silhouette.  This suggests to the audience that the narrative  will interestingly develop. Back lighting is used and slightly emphasizes the lady's facial expressions which show great fear. Words that we can link to this image would be trepidation and consternation. Trepidation means to have a feeling of anxiety about something that may be about to happen or has happened. Consternation means to have a feeling of dismay at something unexpected.

This image uses high key lighting however the still is in colour this time. Some top lighting  is used which makes the film stars appear more glamorous and accentuate their features. The effect of the lighting used means that the audience gets a very clear image of the couples affection for one another clearly.

This image uses low key lighting which creates a strong contrast between light and dark.  It also uses back lighting which creates a silhouette of the four men in the frame. Enigma codes can be created from this frame about the uncertain identity of the four men. The fact that the image is black and white makes it even harder for a potential audience to distinguish the identity of the characters.

This image is a superb example of the Chiaroscuro effect that is creating strong contrast between light and dark with dramatic shadows being created. Therefore, this is low lighting. There is also the use of back lighting which produces the silhouette. The use of the back lighting also emphasizes the facial expression of the lady and shows a look of terror or worry.

This is high key lighting which means more filler lights are used. This makes the scene seem more realistic. This image also uses top lighting which draws our attention to the actors facial expression. In the image the hand gesture suggests that the scene may be from a film that is religious or themed in such a way.

This image uses back lighting and low key lighting which creates the dramatic shadow of the person in the still.  All that can be seen in the image is the masked man with a huge knife as a result of the lighting used. This creates a sense of uncertainty or horror about the scene. In this scene we have enigma codes of what might be at the bottom of the stairs and the identity of the masked man. These would entice the audience because it makes them wonder how the narrative might be about develop. We can also make an assumption that the masked man might be the antagonist of the scene out to cause mayhem.

This final image uses back lighting and high key lighting. This  helps to create the shadows of the two characters. The use of the high key lighting highlights how intimate the two characters are in this particular still. However, on closer analysis the male character is holding a pistol in his hand which could suggest enigma codes of what he might do with the weapon which is not yet answered in the particular still therefore drawing the audience in. It could suggest betrayal on the male characters part later on in the narrative.

Mise en scene

This image is from the film 22 Jump Street. A action comedy film released in 2014. The film grossed a total of $191.7 million in North America and $139.4 million in a number of other countries. This came to a total worldwide of $331.3 million against the budget of $65 million. It out grossed the first Jump Street film which came to a total of $201.6 million during its theatrical run.

In the still image we have the three main characters of the film whom are pictured in a medium shot that is landscape. This allows us to clearly see the characters facial expressions  which helps to engage the audience and get them wondering as to what might happen next. The use of the props which are guns held by each of the characters could suggest to the audience that the narrative  may have an unhappy ending. The position of the characters could suggest that there is a small hierarchy system as Ice Cube is standing slightly further forward as a pose to Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum. This could suggest that he is the lead character and the other characters provide .

On the other hand, a alternative narrative suggestion that can be put the audience is that these guys may be the ones to save some others who are in trouble. This is connoted by the feint lighting around them which seems to make them glow like the hero. Furthermore, make up  is worn by all three characters but Tatum and Hill seem to wearing more of a feint shade this suggests that they are being portrayed  to have a more young and youthful approach to the audience. Finally, the costume of the characters shows a particular persona to the audience. In this case, the persona is a cool and calm look with the summer printed shirt on Hill and the casual plain shirt on Ice Cube. The Props used here, are a useful way of telling the audience the reason behind the scene. Due to the fact that they are holding a gun with their finger on the trigger it suggests quite a high level of seriousness in the particular scene. It could suggest they are in the middle of something serious such as a drugs bust.

EXTRACTS FROM FILMS/ TRAILERS

Minions:

Minions is a recently released film of 2015. It is a American 3D computer animated family comedy film.  It serves as the prequel of the Despicable Me franchise. As of September 13th 2015 minions has grossed a total of $331.6 million in the US and $748.5 million in other territories.

The trailer for minions portrays animated characters in overalls. We see them travel through time searching for a leader. They soon find someone to lead them. The expressions on their faces are over –exaggerated which make audiences enjoy watching them and want to watch more. Their strange speech also adds to the enjoyment for the audience as they are seen to be ‘cute’. The genre of the film is comedy which means that the people will go into the cinema expecting to laugh therefore, the trailer has to also make them laugh and set them up to enjoy the film. The use of bright colours to represent the minions and their surroundings is in synergy with the comedic and funny tone of the film.

Insidious: Chapter 3:

In the trailer for Insidious, we only see short clips which build up an anxious atmosphere. This them helps to get the audience interested and make them guess how the narrative might develop. The fact the we never fully see the ‘creature’ that attacks means that we, as viewers, create our own image of it – a proposed image. The use of colours suggest that the film has a very dark or creepy setting. The dim lighting and the dull and flat black and grey colours. This is further emphasised by the use of standard coloured clothing e.g. bright pink dresses and green jackets. This causes us as viewers, to feel sympathy for the characters as they a dressed the same as us.

Film Poster Analysis

Blade Runner:
1)  I think the story is set with a futuristic feel to it, where lots of chaos occurs. It could be a conflict between the main hero and villain. The conflict could be about the worlds the main characters are from which could be very different.
2) Blade Runner looks as though it would belong to the sci-fi genre.
3)  The target audience seems like it is young adults.

Scary Movie 2:
1) The story line could be based on the group of friends who see a scary film and almost become a part of the film. It might be about a simple trip out gone wrong. The mise en scene (Actors Expressions) suggest that there may be more to the basic assumption and therefore helps to encourage people to watch it.
2) The genre is both comedy and horror. Comedy as Scary Movie 2 is a parody of classic movies prior such as Scream and others like The House On Haunted Hill.
3) The target audience seems to be teens and young adults. The tagline seems to anchor the meaning of the film that the film has a very easy going story line.

UZAK:
1) The story line seems to be documentary based. This is because the denotations of the poster indicating the dull colours could be emphasizing a sad nature to the film. The name of the film UZAK seems like a individuals name and there is only one person on the poster suggesting that UZAK is him. The story line could possibly be based upon a man who has had a harsh upbringing and is looking for the solution to his pain.
2) The genre is documentary based,
3) I think the target audience is 16/17+ as the content may be too disturbing for children any younger than this.

I'm not scared:
1) I think this story is about a boy who is trying to overcome his fears by going on some sort of an adventure. The actors expressions (Mise en scene)  could suggest that the actor is asking himself a question of "Shall I? Shan't I?. The typography in the title is in bold and capital letters which could suggest that the boy is brave but might be preparing to shout the title words down the ditch/hole.
2) The genre seems to be adventure but also action contrasted by the bright blue sky which suggests a happy ending to the story
3) The target audience seems to be young teenagers of around 14yrs+

Sin City:
1) Hence forth of the name this story could be about people who are fighting against one another due to the horrible sins they have committed. The connotation of the word city, could mean that the sins are so bad that mayhem could arise.
2) The genre is action and adventure thriller.
3) The target audience is young adults of ages 15+. I think any younger children may be frighted of the content.

Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Mans Chest:
Looking at the poster we can tell that the genre is action/adventure orientated. This is shown by the props used in the poster, such as the boats that seem to be pictured on rough seas.  Furthermore, the gun in Sparrows hand and the the fire behind the skull denotes danger. The mise en scene (actors expressions) all vary which could suggest  that they have alter motives, Sparrow looks content but with a slight grin on his face. While Orlando Bloom has a look of displeasure and Kira Knightly looks like she is guilty of something. The target audience is 13/14+ years.

Bride & Prejudice:
The immediate genre that I can link with this film is romantic comedy. The target audience is 15+ years. This is due to the fact that some of the content may be inappropriate for a younger audience. The story line seems to be about to totally different people who have been brought together through marriage. The different worlds is shown with the contrast of city based builds in the distant for the male and the Taj Mahal in the distant for the woman. However, the connotation of the word "prejudice" and the extra characters in the background on the female's side suggests that she may have preconceived opinions about marriage.

Million Dollar Baby:
The genre I would associate with million dollar baby is action yet adventure. The target audience might be that of  23+ years old. The story line seems to be very mysterious, this is shown in the mise en scene of the actors expressions being fairly serious and not looking directly at the camera, The use of the dull colours connotes a possible tragic or sad ending.
