Montage Editing (Shots placed after one another that don't necessarily covey a linear narrative)
I think that the break in scene uses montage editing because it begins by showing the phone call with the police and we would expect that the following scene would be of the police arriving at the house but it actually of the burglar who got into the house. The shots convey a short message to the audience but it is a message that I think you need to read between the lines to find.

Camera: Medium Shots, Medium Close up, Long Shots and a tracking camera movement
--Emotional Drama
--Continuity Editing
I think that continuity editing has been used well, this is because it makes the scene more dramatic and it therefore grabs the attention of the audience. Then, the various camera shots that follow the continuity editing help the audience to connect with the characters it is like it is trying to make us feel part of the bus crash.
The Graduate
-- Dip to black
--Whip Pan
-- Panning camera movement (Camera moving side to side following the character as he runs)
Boyhood
-- Non Diegetic Sound
--Over the shoulder shot coversation

--Flashback
The use of continuity editing helps the audience to connect with the films characters, it feels like Donnie is talking directly to us. This then helps suture the audience into the narrative as they are interested in finding out what significance the conversation may have with the rest of the narrative. This particular scene from Donnie Darko is also using a flashback, this is a very clear but sudden image of something that happened in the past. Using the flashback makes the audience feel as though they have known Donnie for a long time and have grown up with him and that they are the ones having the conversation with him in this scene.
In this clip, of Donnie Darko sound is also carefully considered. I identified use of a sound bridge, I think that the use of the sound bridge helps the audience to understand how the boy is seeing his past. Personally, with the use of the sound bridge I understand that the boy had a pleasant past with a lot of happy memories and now that he is grown up he might have possibly suffered some set backs which is why he is having a conversation with the counsellor(?) who is helping him get through the tough times.
